Our History

April 1992

Formosa Petrochemical was established through a joint investments of NT$ 15 billion from Formosa Plastics, Nan Ya Plastics, Formosa Chemicals & Fibre, Formosa Taffeta, and Formosa Heavy Industries.

July 1994

Construction of the No. 6 Naphtha Cracker Complex commenced.

December 1997

Construction of co-generation plant (utility plant No.1) was completed and commercial operations began.

February 1999

To facilitate petroleum and chemical product transportation needs, Formosa Petrochemical Transportation Corporation was joint-invested with Formosa Plastics Corporation and established.

Construction on No. 1 naphtha cracking plant, with ethylene nameplate capacity of 450,000 MTY, was completed and commercial operation began.

December 1999

The first million tons of crude cargo arrived in Mailiao Harbor and successfully unloaded the cargo in 15 days.

March 2000

Phase 1 refinery, with a nameplate processing capacity of 150,000 barrels of crude oil per day, was completed. Commercial production of LPG, naphtha, kerosene, gasoil, and various heavy petroleum products began.

September 2000

Formosa Petrochemical's gasoline and low-sulfur diesel formally marketed in the domestic market. Formosa Petrochemical becomes the first private petroleum product supplier in Taiwan.

October 2000

Construction of No. 2 Naphtha Cracker, with ethylene nameplate capacity of 900,000 MTY, completed and commercial operations began.

December 2000

On December 23, 2000, Mailiao Industrial Port became the first harbor in Taiwan to dock a 26 metric ton VLCC.

August 2002

Formosa Petrochemical's jet fuel formally offered in Taoyuan International Airport.

November 2002

Capacity de-bottlenecking of No.1 naphtha cracking plant was completed, increasing the plant's ethylene nameplate capacity from 450,000 MTY to 700,000 MTY.

December 2003

Initial public offering completed and listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

February 2004

Received license to operate for the 18 gas stations on Chungshan Freeway.

Issued USD$ 250 million convertible/exchangeable notes

September 2004

Received Ministry of Economics' award for Energy Conservation Excellence for 2004.

November 2005

Received CNLA certification for LPG product.

December 2005

No. 2 Naphtha Cracker single day cracking volume up to 3,493 ton, highest since commissioning.

March 2006

Ministry of Economics pronounced Formosa Petrochemical as the national leading exporter based on monetary value.

August 2006

Invested in FPCC USA, INC. to develop upstream E&P work.

January 2007

Began supplying jet fuel at Taipei Shongshan Airport.

May 2007

Construction of No. 3 Naphtha Cracker with ethylene nameplate capacity of 1.2 million MTY completed and began commercial operation.

September 2007

Underground pipeline connecting Mailiao Industrial Complex to Taipei Port completed and began transporting petroleum product.

November 2007

Monthly refining capacity reached 524,000 barrels day, setting a historical record.

January 2008

Officially export gasoil sulfur content 10ppm

August 2009

Received Award for International Trade by Ministry of Economics

October 2009

Construction of Base Oil unit completed and commercial operations began.

August 2010

Joint Venture with Kraton Performance Polymers, Inc. to establish Kraton Formosa Polymers Corporation.

Received Award for International Trade by Ministry of Economics

November 2013

No. 3 Naphtha Cracker received Ministry of Economics' award for Industruial GHG Voluntary Reduction.

December 2013

No. 3 Naphtha Cracker received Ministry of Economics' award for Water Conservation Reduction.

Nov. 2014

Construction of C5 Recovery Unit completed and commercial operations began.

Jul. 2015

Received Award for International Trade by Ministry of Economics.

Jan. 2016

Joint Venture with Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd to establish Idemitsu Formosa Specialty Chemicals Corporation.
